07/04/23 Next Generations

READING: Psalms 76-83

Let me tell you something I often wonder about—and have yet to understand. I have talked with many parents and grandparents who have never really told their Christian story to their next generations. For whatever reason, they keep the stories of God’s mercy and blessings to themselves.

Maybe they assume their family members are not really interested in yesterday’s stories. Or, it might be that they keep the stories to themselves because they know their lives don’t currently match their stories. It could even be that the older generations no longer give much thought to God’s intervening grace in the yesterdays of their lives. In any case, next generations miss out on what God has done.

God’s people in today’s reading at least verbalized a commitment to not let that happen: “We will not hide them from their children, but will tell a future generation the praiseworthy acts of the Lord, his might, and the wondrous works he has performed” (Psa 78:4). Indeed, the entirely of Psalm 78 tells that story so next generations would not forget God’s hand in their history.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do your loved ones know your story?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, thank You for what You’ve done in my life. Help me to tell next generations.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Psalms 84-93
