READING: Proverbs 26-31
The older I get, the more I realize the truth of Proverbs 27:1 – “Don’t boast about tomorrow, for you don’t know what a day might bring.” The sense of the text is that we are not to be presumptuous about our plans, nor should we assume that we somehow can control the tomorrows of our lives. Anything we might boast about our potential accomplishments in the days to come is subject to the unknown hand of God; only He is in charge of tomorrow.
That does not mean that we are not to plan wisely, but it does mean we must ultimately leave things in the hand of God. As James would later remind his readers, “You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes” (Jms 4:14). The future really does rest in the will of God—but He and His plan are fully trustworthy.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: How much confidence are you putting in the tomorrows of your life?
DAILY PRAYER: “God, help me to trust You today for my tomorrows.”
