READING: Jeremiah 5-8
The words are tough ones. The comparison/contrast is dramatic. The frustration of a holy God is clear. Indeed, He described the situation with His people this way: “I satisfied their needs, yet they committed adultery” (Jer 5:7). He had provided all they needed, but they still either (1) turned to other gods to commit spiritual adultery, or (2) literally committed physical adultery with others who were not their spouses. Either way, they rejected God’s ways.
Today, I am reminded that too many of us live our lives in a similar “He __________, yet we _________” fashion—characterized by examples such as these:
- He blessed us, yet we want more.
- He has always taken care of us, yet we worry anyway.
- He has never let us down, yet we fail to trust Him.
- He has always come through at just the right time, yet we get impatient with waiting.
- He cared so much for us that He sent His Son for us, yet we doubt His love.
- He hears our prayers, yet we wonder if He’s listening.
The better way to live is not a “He/yet” pattern, but a “He/so” pattern: He is God, so we love and obey Him.
PRAYER: “God, help my actions affirm who You are in me as my Lord.”
