READING: Jeremiah 39-43
Idolatry is silly. And, many of us know that truth as long as we’re pointing out somebody else’s idols; it’s the foolishness of our own idols we seldom see. In fact, we sometimes turn to them over and over again.
God said that He would use Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, to bring judgment on Egypt. In that context, God not only showed His sovereign power and control over history, but He also again pointed out the folly of following idols. For, you see, Nebuchadnezzar would come to Egypt, burn the temples of Egypt’s gods, take those gods captive, and smash sacred pillars of the sun temple. The Egyptians may have turned to those gods, but those same gods were not strong enough to avoid their own captivity and destruction. No false god is ever a match for the one true God.
Still, we’re often guilty, too, of elevating our own idols. What they offer might be fleeting, but we nevertheless turn to them as if what they offered were eternal. Today, we need to let the Word of God remind us of just how silly that choice can be.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: What are your idols today?
PRAYER: “God, show me my idols. Show me how silly it is to cling to them.”
