Wednesday Words: D. Scott Hildreth’s Words on What Pornography Does

My colleague at Southeastern Seminary, Scott Hildreth, has written a helpful book on dealing with pornography. In that book, Bondage and Freedom: Escaping the Trap of Pornography, he discusses what pornography does to us:

  1. Porn makes us think that others exist only for our pleasure. . . . “Porn is an illusion. The people are actors. We know it is acting, but we can be quickly fooled into thinking it is acceptable to view others as our toy or pleasure object.”
  2. Porn trains us to think of others as objects rather than persons. . . . “Pornography trains men and women to be consumers, not lovers. It teaches us to treat sex as a commodity and to think about it as something on-tap and made-to-order.”
  3. Porn is an insult to our partners and contributes to their insecurity in the relationship. . . . “Porn is cheating too. It is seeking, and sometimes receiving, sexual gratification from someone else.”
