READING: Matthew 24-25
The disciples saw the magnificence of the temple in Jerusalem in Jesus’ day. Surely they looked with wonder at the structures so central to that city and to the Hebrew faith. Jesus turned their attention in a different direction, though, with these words: “Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here on another that will not be thrown down” (Matt 24:2). His announcement of judgment would indeed come true with the destruction of the temple decades later.
I am reminded today that the most beautiful things man can create cannot stand against the plan and judgment of God. It all may look mighty and amazing today, but God can collapse it in a second if He wishes to bring judgment. Nothing we create can stand against the One who is both Creator and Judge. What matters is not what temporary structures we create, but what eternal commitments we make.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you living for the temporary or for the eternal today?
PRAYER: “Father, remind me daily about the foolishness of living for the temporary.”
