“We never escape the temptation to compete with others. It was a consistent problem for Jesus’ disciples. We are tempted to establish our worth or value based on how we rank against others. Once we spot our competitive spirit and its roots in pride or insecurity, we can begin to discover why we desire to be ranked (usually only in our minds) ahead of others. That is the moment when our self-centered motivations are revealed and we need to confess them to God. Truly, we need to celebrate others’ gifts and successes rather than be jealous or envious of them.”
