Two-year plan: Numbers 10, Mark 8:11-21

“I tell you, Peter,” he [Jesus] said, “the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you know me” (Luke 22:34). These words halt me in my tracks every time I read them. They compel me to my knees, actually.
That’s because they came on the immediate heels of Peter saying he would go to prison and to death for Jesus. I’m convinced Peter meant those words—as evidenced by his trying to defend Jesus later—but Jesus knew better. Jesus knew that by time the next day came, Peter would do exactly the opposite of what he said he would do. He would not die for Jesus (not yet, at least); in fact, he would not even claim to be living for Him. Three times when he had opportunity to speak of his commitment to Jesus, he denied it.
So, why do these words drive me to my knees? Because they are a reminder that every one of us is but one dumb decision away from failing Jesus. All of us are susceptible to surrendering to our fears and backing off on our commitment to Christ. All of us.
How I thank God that He’s faithful to us!
