06/26/24 They Bowed

READING:

One-year plan: 2 Chronicles 6-8, Acts 3

Two-year plan: Deuteronomy 28:15-68, Luke 4:14-30

———

The position is good one . . . a necessary one at times, in fact. Solomon had finished praying about the temple, and God sent fire to consume the offerings. The glory of God so filled the temple that the priests could not even enter the place. Just that part of the story is quite amazing!

Meanwhile, the Israelites were watching the whole thing happen. When fire descended and the glory of the Lord filled the temple, the people did exactly what they should have done: “They bowed down on the pavement with their faces to the ground” (2 Chron 7:3). In no way could they stand in the Lord’s presence; in no way could they do anything but bow. Indeed, from their positions of humility they sang their familiar words, “For he is good, for his faithful love endures forever.”

To be on our faces on the pavement is to admit how unworthy we are and to proclaim just how incredibly worthy God is. It is an act of reverence and humility to which we are unaccustomed; it is an act of worship. To encounter God in such a way may be a rare occurrence, but the simple fact that He died for us, has saved us, and has made us His children ought to drive us to the same position. He is worthy!

PERSONAL REFLECTION: When is the last time you simply fell before God?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, You are worthy. You are good. Your faithful love endures forever. Amen.”
