08/19/24 We Will Not be Afraid

READING:

One-year plan: Psalms 45-50, Romans 9

Two-year plan: 1 Samuel 4:2-5:12, Luke 17:1-19

———-

We live in a frightening world. Violence escalates. War explodes. Refugees flee. Disease ravishes. Nature destroys. Families dissolve. Evil increases. I could continue the list, but I trust you see the picture. In some ways, we have reason to be afraid. Except . . .

Except that the sovereign God is on our side.

Here’s the way the psalmist described it: “God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble. Therefore we will not be afraid, though the earth trembles and the mountains topple into the depths of the seas, though its water roars and foams and the mountains quake with its turmoil” (Psa 46:1-3). The simplicity of these texts demands that we not overthink them; we instead just believe them and act on them. When God is our refuge . . . when God is our strength . . . when God always makes Himself found when trouble hits, what we face doesn’t matter. We simply have no reason to be afraid. None.

May the Lord conquer our fears today as we start a new work week!
