I suspect that most of us reading this devotion know the story of God’s leading His people out of Egypt and across the Red Sea. We can talk about dividing waters, crossing Hebrews, and drowning Egyptians. I’ve read this story many, many times, but I sometimes forget what the story should do for us. Think with me about the two groups of people in this story.
First, the Egyptians—who, when they found themselves in trouble in the returning waters, cried out, “Let’s get away from Israel, because the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt!” (Exo 14:25). The Egyptians had their own pantheon of gods, but those gods were no match for the God of the Bible. He who fought for His people was stronger than any other perceived gods. So, in this case, God convicted non-believers of His power through this miracle.
Second, the Hebrews—God’s people who, after they had crossed the Red Sea on dry ground, “feared the Lord and believed in him and in his servant Moses” (Exo 14:31). In this case, God strengthened the faith of His people through the same miracle. That’s what God still does today when He makes His name known through whatever great display He chooses: He convicts non-believers of His almighty power and strengthens believers in their faith.
Today, don’t miss God’s power in your life!
PERSONAL REFLECTION: When is the last time God showed His power in your life?
