My wife has taught me the importance of handwriting notes. I’ve never known her not to write such a note when warranted – and she reminds me to take care of my responsibilities as well. Maybe you’d prefer to send a text or an email, but I nevertheless encourage you to intentionally reach out to several people this year. Surprise somebody in 2025 with a quick word of gratitude and appreciation:
- Your spouse – A surprise note from you can go a long way.
- Your children – Let them know how much you love them. Your little ones might even appreciate getting a note in the mail.
- Your parents – If your parents are living, send them a word of thanks as appropriate. No matter how old we get, gratitude is still welcome.
- Your pastor – Pastor Appreciation Month isn’t until October, but that reality makes a note at a different time of year that much more significant.
- Your church staff members – Sometimes (and wrongly), staff members aren’t honored as much as the lead pastor. Send your staff a quick note.
- Your small group leaders – They serve week after week, with no expectation of recognition. For that reason, do recognize them.
- Your children’s or grandchildren’s Bible study teachers – I love children, but I’m not sure if I could teach them every week. So, I’m grateful for those who do. If you’re thankful, too, tell them.
- The person who led you to the Lord – If he or she is still alive, send a note. What greater gift than Jesus can someone give you?
- Someone who inspired you early in your Christian walk – In the past few months, unexpected opportunities to spend time with folks who encouraged me decades ago have made me want to connect with others in my past to whom I might send a note. I’m excited about the possibilities.
- The person who most inspires you today – Seldom do we realize how much people watch our lives. Send a note to the one whose life most challenges and inspires you today.
- A neighbor – Good neighbors can be hard to find sometimes. Let them know your appreciation.
- Someone who just needs hope – You probably know someone whose life is troubled and confusing. An unexpected note from you, a Christian friend, might be a welcomed surprise.
- A present or former teacher – I’m biased, I admit it, but teachers make a difference. A note to your teacher, your child’s teacher, or a former teacher can encourage someone to press on through another day.
- A non-believing friend – Perhaps you have a friend who doesn’t yet follow Jesus, but who is important to you. A note can strengthen that relationship – and maybe open the door to sharing the gospel.
- God – After all, He’s the source of all our blessings. Journal a prayer of thanksgiving to Him today.
