Our world’s messy. We need wisdom. Not just intelligence and academic degrees, but wisdom. Real wisdom.
If we dig to the bottom of the earth, though, we cannot find it there. Nor can we find it in the depths of the sea. Wisdom is rare, precious, costly – and we cannot buy it. We, too, ask the same questions as in today’s reading: “where can wisdom be found?” (Job 28:12) and “where does wisdom come from?” (Job 28:20).
The answer, of course, is that God is the one who knows wisdom—and He is the one who teaches us how to live wisely. Indeed, wisdom is evident in living fearfully and respectfully before God, ever pushing away from evil as we choose obedience toward Him. That’s wise.
I say it again: we need wisdom, especially in the ever-changing world we live in. According to Job, though, we need awe over God and obedience to Him. That’s wisdom (and, on the other hand, it’s a reminder that taking God for granted and ignoring His standards is decidedly unwise . . . ).
PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do your life choices reflect wisdom today?
PRAYER: “God, teach me the wisdom of awe and obedience.”
