07/01/25 Eternity, and Brevity

READING:

One-year plan: Psalms 88-94

Two-year plan: Proverbs 29-30, Galatians 1:11-24

———-

God is eternal. He always has been, and He always will be. In the words of the psalmist in today’s reading, “Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, you are God” (Psa 90:2). He is indeed forever; in His sight, “a thousand years are like yesterday that passes by, like a few hours of the night” (Psa 90:5-6).

The contrast with us as human beings is quite stark, of course. He is from “eternity to eternity,” be we are “like grass that grows in the morning—in the morning it sprouts and grows; by evening it withers and dries up” (Psa 90:5-6). So different are we from God that one writer has said, “The reminder is that the events of human history, although significant for each generation in turn, are but a moment from God’s perspective and are all under his control as Creator and the one who ordains life and death.”* God is everlasting, but we are frail and fading.

These words are a simple reminder to me today that I should not waste this day. If today is all I have remaining on this earth, I want to die honoring my eternal Creator and Redeemer.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you living in light of eternity?

PRAYER: “God, keep my eyes on forever as I serve You today.”
