“But he could not prevail.” These are words from today’s reading I will hold on to throughout this day.
The words refer to the “dragon” identified in this text as the “the ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the one who deceives the whole world” (Rev 12:9). He was engaged in an ongoing battle against God and His people, and Michael and his forces stood against him. That’s where these significant words listed above come into play. The devil fought God’s forces, “but he could not prevail” (Rev 12:8).
No, the accuser of the brethren did not win. Rather, it was ultimately through the blood of the Lamb and the faithfulness of God’s people he was defeated. The enemy no longer had standing to accuse God’s children once Jesus had paid the price for our sins.
“But he could not prevail.” No matter what I face today, I trust I will turn to this truth. The world around me may collapse today, but the enemy who still wages war against us has already been defeated.
