Deuteronomy 7-11

Sometimes I’m a forgetful person—most likely because I tend to have so much on my mind that something gets unintentionally pushed to the back burner. Seldom has my forgetfulness cost me much, though I recognize that it certainly could at some point. I particularly never want to forget things that really matter.

God warned the Hebrews about the potential of their forgetting something MOST important: “Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God by failing to keep His commandments, His ordinances, and His statutes which I am commanding you today” (Deut 8:11). Apparently, even they whom God had so blessed and protected were prone to forgetting Him.

That’s amazing to consider until you think about what might cause that forgetfulness: prosperity that turns their heart toward stuff and away from God. Here’s the way Moses described that tendency: “otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, and you build good houses and live in them, and when your herds and your flocks increase, and your silver and gold increase, and everything that you have increases, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery” (Deut 8:12-14).

You and I face that same possibility. It’s easy to take blessings for granted, live for them, and forget the God who provided them in the first place.

RESPONSE: Thank God for His blessings today.
