02/28/16 Questions Worth Asking

READING: Deuteronomy 3-4

My mom wrote in my baby book that I started asking questions when I first began talking. I suspect that I still follow that pattern even 50+ years later.  I love learning, and learning often comes from being inquisitive. There are other times, though, when we know the answer to the question when we ask it. Those are the kinds of questions Moses asked when he reminded the Israelites of the miracles and blessings God had given to His people as they prepared to enter the Promised Land:

(Deut 4:7-8“What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?”

(Deut 4:32-34“Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? Has any other people heard the voice of God speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived? Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds, like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?”

We could ask the same kinds of questions today. Has any other God ever died for the sins of the world? Has any other God ever risen from the dead? Is any other God going to return again to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords? The answer is “no,” and here’s why: “. . . the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other (Deut 4:39, emphasis added).

Amen.

ACTION STEPS: Consider these steps:

  • Just worship Him today.
  • Read His Word. Talk to Him. Sing His praises.
  • Pray for the billions of people around the world who have never heard His name.

PRAYER: “God, You are Lord. Reign in my heart, my family, my life.”

TOMORROW’S READING:  Deuteronomy 5-7
