08/18/18 Mercy

READING: Jeremiah 38-40, Psalm 74, 79

“Let your compassion come to us quickly.”

Psalm 79:8

The enemy had invaded Jerusalem and desecrated God’s temple. The neighbors of Israel were ridiculing them. The people of God, though, were guilty of sin and deserving of judgment.

Nevertheless, they sought God’s help in their desperation—but for the sake of His name. They knew the nations would ask, “Where is their God?,” and they wanted God to save them for the glory of His name. Their cry was one that most of us likely need to pray at some point: “Do not hold past iniquities against us;let your compassion come to us quickly, for we have become very weak” (Psa. 79:8).

Hear the desperation in that prayer. The people knew they were guilty. They realized they needed forgiveness, and only God’s compassion could make a difference. They needed it quickly, for they had grown weary under the enemy’s attack. Their hearts were exhausted under the weight of their own sin and conviction. Any hope they had rested in the mercy of God—and there we learn that His mercy trumps our rebellion.

ACTION STEPS:

  • Thank God for His mercy.
  • Tell somebody today how grateful you are that God does not give up on you.

PRAYER: “God, I’m a guilty sinner in need of grace and mercy every day. Thank You for Your love.”
