10/18/19 Stars in the Sky

READING: Isaiah 40-42, Colossians 1:24-2:23

To be honest, I typically do each day’s devotion one day ahead of time so that I can post it in time for others to receive it early in the day. So, I’m actually working on this devotion on October 17 though the date is October 18. That approach, though, is especially helpful to me tonight as I read the biblical text for the day. As soon as I read the Old Testament text, “To whom will you compare me, or who is my equal?” asks the Holy One. Look up and see! Who created these? He brings out the stars by number; he calls all of them by name. Because of his great power and strength, not one of them is missing” (Isa 40:25-26), I walked outside just to look at the stars.

While the pagans of Isaiah’s day worshipped the stars, the God of the Hebrews actually made them. I have no idea how many stars I could see tonight. Nor do I know how many, many are out there somewhere that I could not see. Regardless of what that number is, though, God knows exactly how many there are and precisely where they are in the sky. He calls them into the sky at His command, and He moves nature so they twinkle against the dark sky. I stared into the sky tonight, and I could answer the questions the Holy One asked in Isaiah 40:25 with only these words: “No one compares to You, God, and no one is Your equal. You alone are God.”

Sometimes, it’s just good to slow down, look around, meditate on God’s Word, and stand amazed in His presence.

PRAYER: “God, thank You for the stars that point to You. Thank You for being my Creator and Redeemer.”
