02/28/20 Grace and the New Covenant

READING: Leviticus 21-23, Hebrews 8

There are times when I just need a reminder of God’s grace in my life—perhaps because I take it for granted or have forgotten its significance. Or, maybe I no longer see myself as the sinner that I am, and I fail to recognize my need for grace. Whatever the cause might be, I need God’s reminders found in His Word. Today’s New Testament reading is one of those reminders.

The writer of Hebrews speaks of the new covenant in Hebrews 8. Jesus is the greater high priest, and He is the “mediator of a better covenant” (Heb 8:6). As God would graciously forgive His wayward people, He offered to them—and ultimately, to us—these promises:

  • “I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Heb 8:10)
  • “I will forgive their wrongdoing, and I will never again remember their sins.” (Heb 8:12)

God transforms our heart, invites us into relationship with Him, guards us as His people, and forgives our wrong. Grace is written all over the new covenant, and we forget that truth to our detriment. God’s grace extended to us demands our thanksgiving and obedience.

PRAYER: “God, thank You for Your grace. Forgive me for taking it for granted.”
