05/06/20 A Holy Spirit Decision

READING: 1 Samuel 21-22; 1 Chronicles 5; Psalm 52; Acts 15

I’m grateful for how the early Church made the Jerusalem Council decision regarding Gentiles who had become believers. This decision was a significant one in the history of the Church, and it was imperative that they get it right. First, Paul and Barnabas confronted the teachers in Antioch who taught that one must be circumcised to be a believer. They did not ignore the situation in front of them even as they later determined to go to Jerusalem to discuss this issue with the apostles. Second, the apostles and elders gathered together to hear arguments related to this issue. Much debate ensued, followed by guidance from Peter, Paul, Barnabas, and James—all leaders in the church. They simply told all that God had been doing among the Gentiles, and the people listened.

Acts 15:22 indicates that the body of believers in Jerusalem then affirmed the plan James had proposed. This was not just leaders suggesting a solution; it was the church hearing from them and standing beside them. The leaders wrote a letter to the Gentile believers, and that letter reveals a critical part in their decision-making process: the Holy Spirit of God had directed them to the decision they made (Acts 15:28).

Yes, they debated. Yes, they differed. Yes, they reached a consensus—all under the leadership of the Spirit. No matter how many believers are involved in decision-making—and, having a plurality of believers considering options is a good step—they must rely on the Spirit for supernatural guidance.

PRAYER: “God, I don’t want to make a decision without listening to Your Spirit. Help me to hear well.”
