Today, I’m thinking about places I’ve been that I’ve now associated with the ringing of bells. I realize that might seem strange, but I remember, for example, a park just north of where I grew up in Ohio—a restful spot known for its carillon in the center. I can still hear those towered bells echoing across the park. I also think about preaching in country churches where the ringing of the steeple bells was essentially a call to worship. Yet again, I’m reminded of the now seldom-used handbell choir ringing out the melodies of hymns, each bell ringer standing behind a covered table and wearing white gloves.
Here’s why I think of bells today. When Paul spoke of the faith of the Thessalonians, he wrote that their faith “rang out” across the region. They followed God faithfully in spite of affliction, and others heard of their conversion from following idols to trusting God. Some scholars have even noted that the word translated “rang out” was also used to speak of thunder claps or trumpet calls. Apparently, the story of their faith reverberated from the Thessalonians. The bells just kept ringing out.
I pray that’s what my faith is like as well, though I know I still have much room to grow. I want the gospel to ring out through me.
