7 Prayers to Pray for Pastors Serving this Weekend in the Shadow of COVID

I’m serving an an interim pastor, and I’m reminded everyday of my need for the prayer support of God’s people. I would want folks to pray these prayers for me, and perhaps they’re a helpful guide for you as you pray for your pastor or other pastors:

  1. That we would, even today and tomorrow, reach out to unchurched and unbelieving folks to invite them to join us either in-person or online this weekend. Pastors, let’s not allow the forced distancing of COVID to limit our evangelism. We still have numerous options to reach out to others.
  2. That we would rejoice at whoever comes rather than be disappointed by lower COVID numbers. It’s easy to remember the “good old days” (that is, prior to COVID . . .), see the crowds that used to come, and be discouraged by today’s numbers.
  3. That we would give everything we have to give even if we’re “just plain tired.” Most of us have been exhausted since COVID started, and the stress just continues. We don’t have the option, though, of giving less than our best as we lead God’s church.
  4. That we would be wise and exemplary in maintaining social distancing, wearing a mask, etc. I know folks debate these issues, and I’m not trying to make an argument; I’m simply saying our members are less likely to be safe if we who lead pay little attention to these concerns.
  5. That we would clearly offer gospel hope to a world that deals daily with pandemic fear and political chaos. We must, of course, preach whatever text God directs us toward, but the gospel story is by definition, “good news.” The world needs this message—and this weekend may be our only opportunity to reach some of our listeners.
  6. That we would grant grace if stressed out church members are unkind to us or others. I’m not suggesting we allow sinfulness to go on, but I do think we need to recognize some folks are dealing with issues far beyond our church. Their frustration toward us may be only a symptom of other concerns.
  7. That we would see God move in clear ways this weekend. Our God graciously makes Himself known to us – and that’s incredible! May He do so this weekend.

Praying for you, pastors.

Chuck, thank you for praying for pastors.
Great point on how we should give it all or “lay it all out on the field.” We have limited time with our members and we should give our best and ignore the tiredness.
    Praying for you too!
