03/17/21 Sin Catching Up

READING: Numbers 32-33, Mark 13:28-14:21

In today’s Old Testament reading, the tribes of Reuben and Gad requested land outside the Promised Land. That request seriously stressed out Moses, who reminded them that a previous generation had chosen not to enter the Promised Land—and it cost them their lives. The Lord’s anger burned against them, and Moses had not forgotten that experience; in fact, he called the two tribes “a brood of sinners” (Num 32:14).

Nevertheless, Moses relented when the tribes committed to fighting alongside the other tribes to conquer Canaan before they would ultimately settle in their chosen place. As long as they fought to the finish until the Lord had driven all the enemies out of Canaan, they could settle where they wished. On the other hand, they would be sinning if they did not keep that commitment – and their sin would “catch up with” them (Num 32:23).

This latter phrase was a reminder that their sinful choices would always have consequences, even if they didn’t occur immediately. That is, they would not get away with their wrong. Their sin, which is almost personified in this text, would eventually catch up with them. That truth, all of us must learn.

PRAYER: “God, remind me today that we never get away with our sin.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  Confess your sin today as the Lord brings it to mind.

TOMORROW’S READING:  Numbers 34-36, Mark 14:22-50
