04/01/21 Coming to Our Senses

READING: Deuteronomy 30-32, Luke 4:31-5:11

I like how the Christian Standard Bible translates Deuteronomy 30:1, a text about the Hebrews after they have suffered the consequences of their sin that led them into exile. The text speaks of the people, having experienced both the blessings of obedience and the curses of disobedience, coming to the realization that their sin has cost them. They would in exile remember these blessings and curses, a process variously described as “call them to mind” (ESV, NASB), “take them to heart” (NIV), and “take them seriously” (MSG). The CSB puts it this way: “When all these things happen to you—the blessings and curses I have set before you—and you come to your senses while you are in all the nations where the Lord your God has driven you . . . .” (emphasis added).

In any case, the picture is this: a disobedient nation realizes the sinfulness of their ways, recognizes the hand of God’s judgment on them, returns to Him in repentance, and obeys Him with all their being again. God would then regather them from among the nations and restore their fortunes as His people. He was, after all, their life (Deut 30:20).

We are wise to remember these lessons ourselves today. Disobedience is costly. And, God is gracious enough to bring us to our senses when we’re living like the prodigal son. To Him be all the glory!

PRAYER: “God, bring me to my senses today in any area of my life that’s displeasing to You.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  Pray this prayer, and then repent as needed throughout the day.

TOMORROW’S READING:  Deuteronomy 33-34, Luke 5:12-39
