06/08/21 The Lord Said, But . . .

READING: 2 Kings 16-18, John 11:17-57

Rebellion echoes throughout today’s Old Testament reading as the writer of 2 Kings describes the Hebrews. I could list many verses here, but likely these examples will make the point:

  • “They did wicked things that aroused the Lord’s anger. They worshiped idols, though the Lord had said, ‘You shall not do this.’” (2 Kgs 17:11-12)
  • “The Lord warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers: ‘Turn from your evil ways. . . .’But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked as their ancestors.’” (2 Kgs 17:13-14)
  • “They imitated the nations around them although the Lord had ordered them, ‘Do not do as they do.’” (2 Kgs 17:15)

It would be easy to read these texts and condemn the Hebrews with the same righteous anger God did. On the other hand, we cannot condemn them without also recognizing that too often we’re just like them. How many times have we known what to do but did something else? How often have we ignored God’s warnings and rejected His orders? Do we ever live like the world when God has told us otherwise? Perhaps our sin is different from the evil idolatry that marked the Hebrews, but our hearts can be equally rebellious.

We serve Him faithfully only because of His grace.

PRAYER: “Lord, I’m reminded today that I can be an idolator, too. Forgive me.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  Be alert today—don’t ignore God’s mandates or warnings.

TOMORROW’S READING: 2 Kings 19-21, John 12:1-26
