06/11/21 With All His Being

READING: 1 Chronicles 1-2, John 13

I’m thinking of an old song as I write this devotion today. Many years ago, I first heard the words to “Oh, How He Loves You and Me”—and I’ve never forgotten them.

I think of this song when I read that Jesus loved His disciples “to the end” (John 13:1). Scholars don’t always agree about the meaning of this latter phrase, but the wording suggests two complementary ideas. First, Jesus loved His disciples all the way to His crucifixion; that is, He never stopped loving them. Second, He loved them to the fullest extent—loving them so much that He was willing to give Himself for them. Thus, His love was continual and deep, ongoing and sacrificial, everlasting and costly. No love would ever compare—and the time had come for Jesus to show that love through His crucifixion.

To the end – that’s how much Jesus loves you and me, too.

PRAYER: “Thank You, Lord, for the way You love us.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  Listen to this song throughout the day—and love Christ in return for His love.

TOMORROW’S READING: Weekend is for catch-up and review
