07/14/21 Emotions

READING: Nehemiah 1-4, Acts 12:1-13:12

I must admit that today’s New Testament reading left me with several emotions. I grieved because Acts 12 speaks of the death of James, a faithful leader King Herod executed with the sword. His obedience to Christ cost him his life at the hands of a violent, crazed king. And, to be honest, I couldn’t help but grieve a bit for Herod as the judgment of God fell on him. Repentance was not his, and God’s angel struck him down. His end was tragic and his eternity even worse.

Then, I chuckled as I read of the church’s response when Peter, now supernaturally freed from prison, showed up at the house of Mary. The servant girl left him standing at the door after she heard his voice, and then the others assumed he was only a ghost. I can just see Peter outside, waiting to get in as those on the inside debated the reality of the servant’s words. The church had been praying fervently, but they didn’t readily believe God had answered their prayers.

Finally, I rejoiced that “the word of the Lord flourished and multiplied” (Acts 12:24) through all these events. Our God is a good God who always accomplishes His plans.

PRAYER: “Thank You, Lord, that You work through even difficult, tragic circumstances.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  As you pray today, try not to be surprised when God answers.

TOMORROW’S READING: Nehemiah 5-7, Acts 13:13-52
