08/26/21 From My Youth to Another Generation

READING: Psalms 70-74, Romans 14:1-15:13

This year, I celebrate 47 years as a Christian, 40 years in full-time ministry, and 25 years as a seminary professor. I look back over the years, and I see God’s faithfulness throughout – from the 12-year-old classmate who first shared Christ with me, to the colleagues and students I’ve worked with for more than two decades, to the elders and members of Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church, where I currently serve as interim pastor. God has simply never let me down.

Still, I trust He has more for me to do. Only He knows out of what seats/positions I might serve Him in the future, but I do know my calling remains to preach His Word. I can never ignore what was an incredibly clear call to me when I first met Christ. For however long God grants me life, I want to proclaim His name. I pray, too, that He will want to use me in the work of gospel proclamation.

For these reasons, these words of the psalmist caught my attention today:

God, you have taught me from my youth,
and I still proclaim your wondrous works.
Even while I am old and gray,
God, do not abandon me,
while I proclaim your power
to another generation,
your strength to all who are to come. (Psa 71:17-18)

As long as God gives me life, I want to proclaim His power to another generation.

PRAYER: “Lord, hear the words of the psalmist: ‘For you are my hope, Lord God, my confidence from my youth.’”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  Review your Christian walk today. Watch for God’s faithfulness from the beginning.

TOMORROW’S READING: Psalms 75-78, Romans 15:14-33
