READING: Psalm 137-143, 1 Corinthians 15:12-49
Occasionally, a verse in the Bible just stops me in my tracks and causes me to think again throughout the day. My guess is that this verse is Psalm 139:4 is one of those verses: “Before a word is on my tongue, you know all about it, Lord.” In context, the verse is a reminder that we can hide nothing from God. We cannot flee from His presence, and He knows all our ways. He who put us together in the first place knows our heart.
Here, though, are some of my thoughts today about verse 4:
- God knows all things, past, present, and future. He alone is omniscient.
- God reads my heart, and He knows my motives—both good and bad—behind any words I speak. I am not fooling Him when what I’m thinking isn’t exactly what I say.
- When my mind leans toward saying something less than godly, God already knows my inclination. Any hesitation I have before saying something ought to be accompanied by, “God is not pleased with even my leanings. Verbalizing the words only compounds the problem. God, forgive me.”
- God is surely most pleased when He knows that coming from my lips will be praise for His greatness and testimony of His love.
- Throughout this day, I plan to pause as I consider the words I speak.
PRAYER: “God, let my lips praise You throughout the day.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: Do the same with me today: pause before you speak, knowing God already knows where your heart leans.
