READING: Jeremiah 23-25, 2 Timothy 2:14-3:17
The false prophets in Jeremiah’s day could not avoid God’s judgment. They may have been trying to fill the people with false hopes by creating their own visions, but they would not accomplish their plan. Instead, God would bring judgment on them. Nothing they tried to do would allow them to avoid His wrath. After all, God asked through the prophet, “’Am I a God at hand,’ says the Lord, ‘and not a God afar off?Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him?’ says the Lord. ‘Do I not fill heaven and earth?’ says the Lord” (Jer 23:23-24).
God is both immanent and transcendent, near and far. He sees all things. He knows all things. He has all power. He is in every place. There was no place the false prophets could hide from his hand of judgment, even if they thought otherwise. He who fills the heavens and the earth would not be deceived.
While we may not be false prophets headed for God’s judgment, we are wise to remember these words as well: we cannot avoid the eyes of God. We can neither run so far nor hide so successfully that He cannot see us. Thus, we are wisest to follow Him fully without compromise, ever walking in the light.
PRAYER: “God, don’t let me forget that I cannot hide anything from You.”
