01/03/21 The Bow in the Sky

READING: Genesis 7:1-10:5, 1 Chronicles 1:5-7, Genesis 10:6-20, 1 Chronicles 1:8-16, Genesis 10:21-30, 1 Chronicles 1:17-23, Genesis 10:31-32

The Bible was new to me back then. I had not been a believer for long, and I was reading the Word of God for the first time. I suppose I knew a little about the flood of Noah’s day, but only because the story is well known in much of Western culture. What I didn’t know was that God had promised Noah a sign that He would not destroy the earth again with water. But, I read Genesis 9 for the first time.

And, then it happened. It rained, the sun came out, and I saw it. A rainbow in the sky.

Sure, I’d seen rainbows before—but this time it was different. This time, it was not just a refraction of light in the sky. This time, it wasn’t just something cool to look at since you don’t get a lot of opportunities to see one. This time, I understood the purpose behind a rainbow: God put the bow in the sky as a sign of His covenant not to destroy the earth with floodwaters again. This time, this temporary sight in the sky directed me to the eternal God who made it all with purpose and intent.

That was many, many years ago now. Still, I can’t tell you today how many times I’ve read the Word, learned something new, and never saw the world the same again. Through His inspired Word, God still speaks to us.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: What have you learned about God lately? Are you still growing in your faith, or are you stagnant?

PRAYER: “Father, thank You for Your promises—and Your commitment to keep them. Thank You for making Yourself known to us.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Genesis 11:1-26, 1 Chronicles 1:24-27, Genesis 11:27-14:24
