02/06/22 Supporting, Not Complaining

READING: Exodus 16:1-19:25

As I prepare to go to church this morning, I’m reminded of other believers who’ve walked beside me, supported me, loved me, and guided me over the years. None of us is designed to live as loners, and all of us need others—and God graciously provides them. We can do God’s work better because we know we’re not doing it alone.

Moses had those persons in his life, too. In today’s reading, we read of Jethro, his father-in-law who wisely challenged him to delegate some of his responsibilities. We are also introduced to Joshua, the warrior-leader who will journey with Moses until he becomes Moses’ successor in leading God’s people. We also read of Aaron and Hur, who held up Moses’ arms so the people would defeat the Amalekites. All of these folks helped Moses do what God had called him to do.

Meanwhile, though, the people of God just kept complaining.

On this Lord’s day as you gather with God’s people, which kind of person are you? Are you supportive of those who lead you spiritually, or are you always complaining? I want to be the former for my pastor and our church staff.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: How do you answer that question for yourself? How might those who know you best answer that question for you?

TODAY’S PRAYER: “Father, give me a supportive heart willing to serve others.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Exodus 20:1-22:15
