02/18/22 Holy to the Lord

READING: Leviticus 7:1-8:36

I love being a spiritual leader in a church – but I must admit that the responsibility associated with this role is at times overwhelming. To think that I will be accountable to God for the souls of the people I lead (Heb 13:17) is a weighty thought indeed. But, I am reminded today as I read about Aaron the high priest that spiritual leadership has always been weighty.

The rituals of preparation for Aaron and his sons included their being washed (likely, a symbolic picture of their being purified for their tasks). Then, Moses garbed Aaron in his priestly attire uniquely designed for the high priest. What catches my attention today is his turban with a gold medallion (Lev 8:9) variously known as “the holy diadem” (CSB), the “badge of holiness” (NLT), and the “holy crown” (ESV). On the medallion were inscribed the words, “Holy to the Lord” (Exo 28:36, 39:30). Aaron was to be a holy spiritual leader, consecrated for the Lord’s work and committed to being an example to others. The medallion was also a means by which the people were reminded that God demanded holiness from them even as He is holy.

God still demands that we be holy as He is holy. May He help us to live in such a way that others see Him in us.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Would others quickly see holiness in you?

TODAY’S PRAYER: “God, help me to be holy.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Leviticus 9:1-11:47
