02/27/22 Contrast

READING: Numbers 2:1-3:51

Today’s reading is again a recounting of the people of God. In the midst of the numbers, though, is another dramatic contrast that should call us to obedience. First, note what Moses wrote about the people of God: “But as the Lord had commanded, the Levites were not included in this registration. So the people of Israel did everything as the Lord had commanded Moses” (Num 2:33-34). Twice we read the repetition of “as the Lord had commanded”—highly significant words, indeed. We have heard similar words before about Moses and God’s people—and surely we would want it said of us, “They did all the Lord commanded, exactly as He commanded.”

In contrast, read these words about the family line of Moses and Aaron, paying particular attention to the story of Nadab and Abihu again: “The names of Aaron’s sons were Nadab (the oldest), Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. These sons of Aaron were anointed and ordained to minister as priests. But Nadab and Abihu died in the Lord’s presence in the wilderness of Sinai when they burned before the Lord the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded” (Num 3:2-4). On one hand, the people “did everything as the Lord had commanded,” but Nadab and Abihu did something “different that he had commanded.” The latter act brought serious judgment, as you may recall.

It is simply right – and wise – to do what the Lord commands. We need to hear those words over and over and over again. Amen.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Is there any place in your life where you’re not doing what God has commanded?

TODAY’S PRAYER: “God, help me this Lord’s day to do whatever You require.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Numbers 4:1-5:31
