03/09/22 “After That . . .”

READING: Numbers 30:1-31:54

Sin cost Moses his opportunity to enter the Promised Land, and he could go only so far—but today’s reading reminds us that God still used Moses to bring godly vengeance on the Midianites. Moses would have one more assignment to do, and then God would call him home. The leader of the Hebrews would lead God’s people to take revenge on the Midianites, including their kings and Balaam, the seer who had led the people astray; then, as God said to him, “After that, you will die and join your ancestors” (Num 31:2).

We, on the other hand, don’t always know when our departure is upon us. Sometimes death catches us by surprise, our having no warning signs of a problem. At other times, we have indicators of declining health—but we almost assume death is still a long way away. I’ve known no one personally whose testimony is, “The Lord told me to complete this task, and then my time would come.” Thus, here’s the question for me today: I don’t know if today is my final day, but if it were—will I have left anything undone I knew I needed to do? Will I have completed my final task?

May God help me not to pass on anything today I know He has called me to do.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: What do you need to do today?

TODAY’S PRAYER: “God, I want You to find me faithful until the end.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Numbers 32:1-33:56
