03/20/22 Successors and Leaders

READING: Deuteronomy 29:2-31:29

God always has a plan. Particularly as we think about leaders in His work, we are reminded today that He continually raises up next generations of leaders for the task. Some of us who gather in our churches to worship today are part of a church with a long history – that is, a long history of God’s raising up leader after leader after leader. For years, decades (and in some cases, centuries), He has called out His own to lead his people.

That pattern is evident in today’s reading as well. Moses knew his death was imminent, and he knew Joshua would be the one to lead the people into the Promised Land. God would be with him, and Joshua would have no reason to be discouraged or frightened. God would not fail him or abandon him. Indeed, the Lord Himself commissioned Joshua with similar words: “Be strong and courageous, for you must bring the people of Israel into the land I swore to give them. I will be with you” (Deut 31:23). The people would be rebellious at times, but Joshua would continue to lead because God was with him.

That’s good news for us. God will not leave us without leaders, and He will be with the leaders He gives us.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Have you prayed for your church’s leaders today?

TODAY’S PRAYER: “Thank You, God, for always raising up leaders for Your people.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Deuteronomy 31:30–32:52, Psalm 90
