04/29/22 So Many

READING: 2 Samuel 17:15-29, Psalm 3, Psalm 63, 2 Samuel 18:1–19:30

According to its title, Psalm 3 reflects the time when King David was fleeing as he faced serious opposition from his son Absalom and his troops. The stakes were high, and the opponents were numerous. In fact, the writer speaks of his opponents as “so many enemies,” “so many . . . against me,” and “so many” saying God would never rescue him. That type of repetition reminds us that David faced significant struggles at this pivotal point in his reign.

So many. So many. So many.

Yet, the psalmist counters the “so many” phrases with phrases that completely overshadow the power of the enemy forces – phrases like, “You, O Lord, are a shield around me . . . . I cried out to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy mountain . . . I woke up in safety for the Lord was watching over me . . . I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies who surround me on every side.” The psalmist understood that when God is on your side, you have nothing to worry about, no fear to consume you, no worries to eat at your soul. Victory truly does come from Him.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do you ever feel like “so many” things are against you?

TODAY’S PRAYER: “Father, I praise You for moment-by-moment victories You alone grant.”

TOMORROW’S READING: 2 Samuel 19:31–20:26, Psalm 7, 2 Samuel 21:1-22, 1 Chronicles 20:4-8
