READING: Song of Songs 1:1-8:14

Love and attraction are incredible emotions. Poets have tried for centuries to describe their power, and the writer of the Song of Solomon did the same. Scholars have debated about the nature of this book in the Bible, but we can’t get away from its description of pursuing love between a man and woman. Growing passions are evident throughout the book.

Though the writer often uses poetic language to describe this love, there are other times when understanding the image is not that difficult. For example, I immediately think of Pam when I read these words from Song of Solomon 4:9—”You have captivated my heart, my sister, my bride; you have captivated my heart with one glance of your eyes, . . .” It’s been more than three decades now since we met and married, but I still remember my heart leaping a bit when I saw her or talked with her on the phone (a landline, that is). My heart was captured. And, not only did I think her eyes were beautiful, but I also loved it when she looked at me with what seemed to be eyes filled with reciprocal love.

How beautiful that kind of love truly is . . . and how precious is that kind of gift from God!

PERSONAL REFLECTION:  If you are married, are you still captivated by your spouse?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, I thank You for my spouse. Thank You for bringing us together.”

TOMORROW’S READING: 1 Kings 11:1-43, 2 Chronicles 9:29-31, Ecclesiastes 1:1-11
