06/07/22 Unpredictability

READING: Ecclesiastes 7:1-11:6

None of us knows what tomorrow will bring (or even what the rest of the day will bring, for that matter). We can make educated guesses based on past experiences, but life has a way of surprising us. Sometimes that happening is positive and encouraging (e.g., an unexpected job promotion), but often it’s painful and frightening (e.g., a doctor’s diagnosis of terminal illness). The fact is that life is unpredictable, and we must learn to live within it for God’s glory even when the storms come.

The writer of Ecclesiastes knew life is this way. While he said much in today’s reading, I’m zeroing in on these words: “One who watches the wind will not sow, and the one who looks at the clouds will not reap” (Ecc 11:4). We don’t know what life will bring—and frankly, it will often bring storms—but we should never allow the possibility of a tough time to keep us from working in the present. Yes, difficulties will come, but worrying about them only invites trouble and procrastination today.

We—and I start with Chuck—just need to trust God and press on.

PERSONAL REFLECTION:  Are you consumed by any possible storms coming your way?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, help me to trust You today and leave the unpredictability of tomorrow in Your hands.”
