06/15/22 A Holy Man

READING: 2 Kings 2:1-25, 2 Kings 4:1-44

The Shunammite woman said of the prophet Elisha, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God” (2 Kgs 4:9). She must have recognized something unique about him, realizing that he who exhibited the Lord’s power had a genuine relationship with God. For that reason, she encouraged her husband to build him a “prophet’s room” to use when he was in town.

In 2 Kgs 4, the evidence of God’s power in Elisha is clear in how he related to and ministered to others. He encouraged the woman that she would have a child despite her years of barrenness. When that child unexpectedly died, God used the prophet to bring life to him again. When the people in Gilgal ate poisonous stew, God used Elisha’s instructions to purify the stew. Then, God also used the prophet to multiply the loaves of bread to feed a hundred people—surely foreshadowing the later multiplication miracles of Jesus. Elisha was a holy man, indeed, whom God used in many ways.

God may choose to use us differently, but His expectation that we be holy has not changed.
