07/03/22 A Good Wife

READING: Proverbs 30:1-31:31

I was 30 years old (10 years into my pastoral ministry) when I married my wife, Pam. To be honest, I probably began internally asking the question of the writer of Proverbs as I got older and older: “Who can find a wife of noble character?” (Prov 30:10). Such a wife is not easy to find, and it is the Lord who grants the precious gift of that finding (and, in cases like ours, He uses two church secretaries to set up two people they think should meet . . . and who, to this day, are proud of their matchmaking work!).

Now 31+ years into our marriage, I better understand the words, “The heart of her husband trusts in her” (Prov 31:10). Wives who walk with the Lord are God’s gracious gift to us. We can trust their integrity, their faithfulness, their love, their words, their heart, their forgiveness, their competence. We can know without question they will help hold our homes together, working beside us and with us to raise another generation of Christ-followers. Our spouses give themselves to us, our children, and others in the spirit of Christ—and such a wife is rare, indeed.

It’s no wonder we “rise up and call her blessed” (Prov 31:28). May God help us to be sure to do that today.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: How might you honor your spouse better today?

DAILY PRAYER: “Father, thank You for the spouse You give us.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Psalm 42-46
