07/11/22 How Can I Repay Him?

READING: Psalms 115-118

In some ways, there is no answer to this question. It is, though, a question all of us should want to ask, as the question itself reflects one’s growing understanding of God’s work in our lives. Just asking the question says something about us and our spiritual walk.

The question? “How can I repay the Lord for all the good he has done for me?” (Psa 116:12).

One answer, of course, is “nothing.” That’s an accurate response, too, because nothing we can ever do would be sufficient to repay the Lord for His gift of salvation. To try to repay grace—an undeserved gift of God—is to misunderstand what grace is in the first place. Repayment is simply illogical when we cannot earn our salvation anyway.

The psalmist, though, does seem to offer an answer to the question that does work. His response to how he could repay God was to accept His salvation, call on Him, be obedient to His commands, and fulfill his commitment as a witness to other around him. His response was to give his life fully to God, knowing he was only a servant of God. He knew that the glory belonged only to God—not to him.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Listen to the song, “Not For Us,” and read the lyrics as you do. How much do you give God the glory for all things?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, it’s all about You. Help me to remember that truth today.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Psalm 119
