READING: Jeremiah 37:11-38:28, Ezekiel 1:1-3:15

Sometimes the Lord doesn’t give us in His Word all the details we might want to know about something. He always gives us all we need, but we in our curiosity sometimes try to figure out more. If you don’t think that’s the case, consider all the books written that attempt to explain almost every detail of Jesus’ 2nd coming—books that often offer more specifics than God ever gave us. On the other hand, there are other times when God’s Word is so specific that it’s almost sweet to consider how concerned He is about the smallest detail of our lives.

In today’s reading in Jeremiah, we learn of another time when Jeremiah paid the price of imprisonment for his faithful proclamation of God’s message. Cast into a bottle-shaped cistern almost impossible to escape, he found himself sinking in the mud. A court official in the king’s palace came to his rescue, gathering a group of men at the king’s command to pull the prophet from the hole. The official not only got ropes to pull up Jeremiah, but he also sent down to him some “old rags and worn-out clothes” (Jer 38:11) he could use to cushion the ropes under his arms. It’s that latter detail that blesses my heart today: the court official thought compassionately about Jeremiah as he prepared him for escape, and God graciously determined to include that small but important detail in His Word for us.

God may not always give us all the details we’d like to have, but He is concerned about every detail of our lives.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: In what simple way did you experience God’s concern about every detail of your life yesterday?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, I just thank You for Your Word today. Every detail of it.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Ezekiel 3:16-4:17, Jeremiah 27:1-28:17, Jeremiah 51:59-64
