09/03/22 He Humbles the Proud

READING: 1 Chronicles 8:29-9:1, Daniel 4:1-37, Ezekiel 40:1-37

Scholars through the centuries have differed in their conclusions about the heart of King Nebuchadnezzar revealed in Daniel 4. Some believe he was genuinely converted, but others think his recognition of the true God still fell short of true heart change. Either way, it does seem apparent that the proud king learned something about the One who is sovereign over all – including kings who assume their kingdoms are indestructible. In humiliation because of his pride, Nebuchadnezzar recognized:

  1. God Himself is forever.
  2. His kingdom is forever. Human kingdoms end, but God’s kingdom is from “generation to generation” (Dan 4:34).
  3. We human beings are nothing compared to God. He is sovereign over all His creatures.
  4. No human being should presume any right to question God’s ways and rule. We answer to Him rather than the other way around.
  5. God humbles those who walk in pride—as Nebuchadnezzar learned the hard way.

Perhaps it is the case that Nebuchadnezzar truly believed, but if not, he at least realized truths that moved him in that direction. Surely we who are believers—yet who also sometimes wrestle with our own pride and kingdom-building—need to remember these things, too.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: As your church prepares for worship this weekend, do you need to deal with any pride in your heart?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, You are the most high who reigns forever. Amen.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Ezekiel 40:38-43:27
