10/16/22 Don’t Worry

READING: Luke 11:14-12:34

I don’t remember when I first read Jesus’ words about worry, but I suspect I had already developed a habit of worry that still persists on some hard days. Perhaps it’s a product of my upbringing or a reflection of my perfectionism. Maybe it’s my sinful heart wanting to be in control of everything. Or, it could be that my tendency to worry is a result of poor discipleship in my early Christian walk. I cannot fully figure out its cause (and frankly, its origin doesn’t matter in the end), but I have learned that Jesus’ teaching about worry is, as always, perfect and right: my worry adds nothing to my life.

In fact, worry costs me sleep, health, and energy. I pay the price of disobedience when I surrender to the idol of worry that consumes me. Worry makes evident the mis-directedness of my heart and robs me of the joy of trusting God. Even as I write these words, I realize how foolish it is to worry when the Creator God is my God. The spiritual waywardness and physical anxiety that worry evokes are hardly comforting.

Meanwhile, God is not worried. About anything. For that reason, I need not be, either.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Is worry an issue for you?

DAILY PRAYER: “Father, help me to seek Your kingdom and trust You with all things.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Luke 12:35-13:21, John 9:1-41
