02/02/23 Forgiveness

READING: Leviticus 2-5

You can tell from these devotions this year that I’m captured by the repetition in some texts. In today’s reading, for example, we hear over and again that an offering was “a pleasing aroma to the Lord” – an indication of God’s approval. Likewise, animals to be sacrificed were to be “without blemish.” In addition, the text reminds us that atonement for sin is necessary for forgiveness: “So the priest will make atonement on their behalf, and they will be forgiven” (Lev 4:20; see also 4:26, 4:31, 4:35, 5:6, 5:10, 5:13, 5:16, 5:18).

Indeed, the words “will be forgiven” appear eight times in today’s reading. God is the One who established the plan to grant forgiveness, and He is also the One who forgives. When the people of God followed His commands and offered required sacrifices, God would graciously purify them, forgive them, and restore them to a right relationship with Himself.

Through the shed blood of Christ, who died in our place as our substitute, you and I, too, can find forgiveness and restoration. Our God is a gracious God.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: How grateful are you for God’s forgiveness?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, thank You for Your gracious forgiveness extended to me.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Leviticus 6-9
