READING: Numbers 10-13
It’s a story many of us learned in our families or in Sunday school. Moses sent spies into Canaan to assess the land God had promised them. They saw the land “flowing with milk and honey,” but other sights consumed their thinking. The people in the land were strong. The cities were fortified. Giants lived in the land. In comparison, the people of God were just “grasshoppers.” From their human perspective—lacking eyes of faith—taking any steps in the direction of the land made little sense to them.
We’re often quick to condemn the majority of the spies who gave the negative report, but we’re sometimes just like them. On one hand, we know the promises of God. On the other hand, we, too, fail to live according to those promises when whatever we face seems overwhelming and frightening. It’s so easy to forget the promises when we face what seems to be peril. We get more focused on the giants than on the God who is bigger than all.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you facing an overwhelming situation today? If so, where is your focus?
DAILY PRAYER: “God, help me to see You sovereignly above all, no matter what I’m facing.”
