READING: Deuteronomy 29-31
Again today, the repetition in the Word ought to catch our attention:
- Moses told all Israel these words as they looked toward the Promised Land: “Be strong and courageous; don’t be terrified or afraid of them” (Deut 31:6).
- He then said the same words to Joshua as he set him apart as his successor: “Be strong and courageous, for you will go with this people into the land the Lord swore to give to their ancestors. You will enable them to take possession of it” (Deut 31:7).
- God Himself then repeated the words to Joshua when He commissioned the Israelites’ next leaader: “Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land I swore to them” (Deut 31:23).
Apparently, taking the land would not be without danger. At the same time, though, the Word of God reverberates with hope for the Hebrews to take with them into the land—hope based on one promise that accompanies each command to be strong and courageous: “For the Lord your God is the one who will go with you; he will not leave you or abandon you” (Deut 31:6) . . . “The Lord is the one who will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged” (Deut 31:8) . . . “I will be with you” (Deut 31:23).
You and I can be strong and courageous for the same reason. God is with us. Amen.
