03/23/23 An Altar to the True God

READING:Judges 5-7

Sometimes we overcomplicate the things we need to do as believers. I’m reminded of that truth today as I read the story of Gideon’s call. He was God’s man for the hour as the people (1) lived under the oppression of the Midianites, and (2) had, in fact, turned to doing evil in the sight of the Lord.

God then gave Gideon a task that makes me think today. First, he was to tear down the altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah poles. Then, he was to build an altar to the true God. Essentially, he was to reclaim the area for God. Gideon did so at night for fear of the people, but he did what God had required.

Tear down the altars to false gods, and build an altar to the true God – that’s what I need to do in my own life. I must identify my idols, tear them down, and worship God alone. That work may be ongoing in my life, but God grants grace for victory.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do you have idols in your life?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, give me grace to overcome my idols and to follow You.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Judges 8-10
